Grief resources after a death

When someone you love dies, it can be hard to know where to turn. You don't need to know what kind of support you need yet. These are free and low-cost places in Calgary and across Canada where you can start, at your own pace.

If you are in crisis

  • 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: call or text 9-8-8, any time, day or night.
  • Health Link: call 811 for health advice from a nurse, 24/7.

Grief support in Calgary

  • AHS Grief Support Program (Bob Glasgow Grief Support Centre): free individual counselling, an education night and grief groups for adults 18+ grieving a death. Call 403-955-8011, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm, to register. More information
  • Hospice Calgary: grief counselling for adults, and a Children's Grief Centre for families with children 19 and under. Call 403-263-4525. hospicecalgary.ca
  • CMHA Calgary Suicide Loss Support Group: a free virtual group for adults grieving a death by suicide, led by a peer volunteer and a counsellor. Email counsellingintake@cmha.calgary.ab.ca. More information

  • The Compassionate Friends of Canada: peer support for parents grieving the death of a child at any age. Call 1-866-823-0141. tcfcanada.net
  • MyGrief.ca: free online modules from the Canadian Virtual Hospice, to explore grief privately at your own pace.
